True art should require no explanation at all.

Blue Is The New Black

Whether you've taken a theory class in college, or you liked playing with finger paints as a child, there is no way one could deny the power of a well-chosen color. From deep purples representing royalty to reds engaging us in a passionate dialog, artists and viewers alike are often emotionally driven simply by what our eyes observe.

According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, "Blue Iris" is the color of 2008. "As a reflection of the times, Blue Iris brings together the dependable aspect of blue, underscored by a strong, soul-searching purple cast," notes Eiseman.

As a designer, I can appreciate the meaning behind the choice, but I'm not sure it's something I will be using very frequently on my project palette. I hope that if it is used by the design community this year, it will be sparingly.

Jackson Pollock 2.0

If you've ever been an art student, then you'll immediately recognize the signature characteristics of a Jackson Pollock painting. It seems simple enough, right? Well, not quite, but you can have fun with this little application that I found on digg.com!

Just move the mouse around at different speeds to get varying thicknesses and click to change colors.

Have fun!

Bienvenue!

In college, I was taught that there was an unspoken rule about what translated into "good" design and art. Some even argued that graphic design doesn't even possess artistic value. I didn't believe that then - and I don't believe it now.

Great pieces of art and design can be found anywhere and should never be restricted to those with a higher education. Sure, one may be able to squeeze a bit more meaning out of something after analyzing it, but true creativity can be manifested by anyone and that's what it's truly about - emotion.

I hope that you'll join me in exploring art, design and the passion for all things creative.
